EMOTIONAL OVEREATING

EFT May Help You Finally Lose Those Extra Pounds.

Are you overeating as a way to suppress or soothe negative emotions, such as stress, anger, anxiety, boredom, sadness and loneliness? According to a recent article at the Mayo Clinic website this may indicate you are you are an emotional eater.

Obesity is reaching epidemic proportions and at any given time, about half of all American women and a quarter of the men are on a diet. The diet industry is booming as it grows to a 40 billion dollar a year industry while most dieters are failing. It is estimated that 95% of dieters will gain their weight back within 5 years.

In recent years, celebrities like Dr. Phil McGraw and Oprah have brought some attention to emotional eating, but the standard advice like talk therapy, journaling, and keeping a food/mood diary … in addition to counting calories, carbs, and fat doesn’t seem to work for many.

The founder of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Gary Craig agrees that emotional overeating is at the root of many failed attempts to lose weight. Gary says “This personal work is a step in the right direction as it gets people to tune into their reasons for overeating, but there is something more subtle at the root of emotional eating.” He explains, “unresolved emotional issues or traumas create blocks or disruptions in the body’s subtle energy systems. These energy disruptions create a type of “anxiety short circuit” in the body that, in turn, causes someone to overeat. This overeating serves to calm the anxiety, but at the expense of consuming unnecessary calories. EFT is very relaxing and usually removes the anxiety. And with the anxiety gone, the drive for emotional overeating disappears. Further, EFT helps to reprogram your energy system so that you eat for nutrition rather than to tranquilize emotions.”

EFT can help people resolve their emotional issues because it addresses the energy imbalance as well as the unresolved negative emotions that are creating the energy imbalance. EFT is easy to learn. It is a form of acupuncture without needles where you tap on a series of acupuncture points while considering your emotional food craving.

As you resolve your emotional issues at a deep energetic level using EFT, your self destructive overeating behaviors will likely diminish or disappear, usually permanently. This freedom from food cravings all happens without willpower! The tendency to respond to emotional issues by consuming food often fades.

EFT is not perfect and emotional overeating can be a complex issue; but when applied correctly and used consistently most people have a success rate of about 70 to 80 percent.

A complete description of EFT is beyond the scope of this article; but you can learn the basics from the free EFT Get Started Package. This includes a free download of the 79 page EFT Manual. You can also dive right in and get the affordable training DVDs

Important note: While EFT has produced remarkable clinical results, it must still be considered to be in the experimental stage and thus practitioners and the public must take complete responsibility for their use of it. Further, Gary Craig is not a licensed health professional and offers EFT as an ordained minister and as a personal performance coach. Those who want to discuss the use of EFT for a specific emotional problem with a professional in the mental health field are referred to our Referral section, where a number of licensed practitioners who use EFT in their practices are listed.
