End Self-Sabotage and Lose Weight

In our society's never-ending quest for the perfect something-or-another, it’s natural to have the ideal for the perfect body image. But which body image? One body image better suited for one person may not and will not work for another person.
Self-defeating talk plays a big role in weight loss failure. Naysayers abound all over, regardless of the endeavor. While you may be able to exercise some control who says what in your life with the company you choose to keep, you must spend your time with you. Self-loathing talk can be harming your efforts and send you spiraling you into an unhealthy cycle before you know it. “I’ll never lose weight. I’ll always be fat. I can never be skinny. Look at this cellulite! This jelly-belly will never go down.” And on and on and on this level of self-sabotaging talk goes, which translates to overspending--and overeating--of cakes, cookies, potato chips, chocolate anything, ice cream and other comfort foods. This all, leads to weight gain and more of the self-degrading talk comes and leads to quieting that nasty negative spewing with more comfort foods. You’re on a cycle: a vicious psychological cycle and the only exercise you’re getting is your hand going in the wallet to pay for all that unhealthy food to quiet the negative thoughts.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Can Help You Break the Cycle

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) can help you get to the root of past traumas that may be influencing your self-sabotaging behaviors with amazing speed. Learn more about EFT and how it can help you lose weight.

Believe You Can Succeed

Remember, if you think you can’t do something or if you think you can do something, you’re usually right in either case. Which one you decide to be right about will determine your outcome.” Anything you set out doing, weight loss included, is almost always mental. If you decide this is the way you’re going to live, then determine this. Like you set in motion the negative affirmations every day, set in place positive affirmations instead. Do this every day. Instead of telling yourself you’re fat, tell yourself instead: “Yes, I am. But I will be less fat this time next week. And I’m going to take a walk today.”

For every negative thought that comes to you, be ready to counter that thought with a positive one. If a negative thought like, “Look at all that belly! That will never go away!” comes to you, you can counter that thought with, “That belly is here now, but it won’t always be. Excuse me, I have a date with a workout class.”

Sometimes mental positive affirmations aren’t strong enough. Visuals are great reminders, too. Write down those mental affirmations and re-read them when you need to. Place a picture of a vacation spot where you will go when you lose weight, or a picture of a thinner person you highly respect where you can easily see it. Consider your body image and where you want to be with that of the 1940s and 1950s glamour stars and how they were seen, then. Mark a big circle on a specific calendar date to ensure you exercise almost daily and maintained your healthy menus. Call someone who will gently hold you accountable of your goals.

Your job on this weight loss path isn’t just about losing weight. It’s about making a mental turnaround to make your weight loss permanent. Part of the reason many people gain back their lost weight is their mental outlook never changed. Change your perspective and you will change your life.

Important note: While EFT has produced remarkable clinical results, it must still be considered to be in the experimental stage and thus practitioners and the public must take complete responsibility for their use of it. Further, Gary Craig is not a licensed health professional and offers EFT as an ordained minister and as a personal performance coach. Those who want to discuss the use of EFT for a specific emotional problem with a professional in the mental health field are referred to our Referral section, where a number of licensed practitioners who use EFT in their practices are listed.
